Ochsner Ironman 70.3

Race weekend is upon us!  In case you didn't know, Team lbs. (Uncle Buddha, #mcn3ill, Fat Chad) has been training for the past several months in preparation for Sunday's 3rd annual Ochsner Ironman 70.3 in New Orleans. Unfortunately, Uncle Buddha isn't going to be able to join us on the race course because apparently he has a business to run, blah, blah, blah...but he'll be out there cheering with donuts and coffee in hand.

Over the past few months we have logged over 17 hrs of swimming in the pool and in Lake Ponchartrain, biked over 640 miles along the Mississippi River and ran ~155 miles throughout New Orleans.  This comes to about 100 hours of training.  This includes 5:30 a.m. swims, 3 hour Saturday morning bike rides, track/speed work at night dodging the children's track team, weight training, core work, cold dip, hot tub, sun burns, gallons of chocolate milk...repeat. During all of this, Patrick has lost about 40 lbs. and is still going strong!

This isn't me bragging about how much we have done.  This is me refocusing on my goal and purpose.  While cliche, this has been, and always will be, about the process and not the end result. Don't get me wrong. Race day is exhilarating and electric, with the atmosphere being like none other.  However, we didn't just wake up and decide to race: we planted the seeds 6 months ago, carefully tended the crop and now we get to reap what we have sown with Sunday being Harvest Day.

As always, thanks to everyone for your support and well wishes.

Looks like we might catch a break with the weather.  I have a feeling the course record is in jeopardy of being broken.

March Madness

In the spirit of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, I would like to post a challenge to the GrowDat Nation:

Grow Dat!

I would love to see everyone grow something edible this season.  Whether in the ground, in a square foot garden or in a container on your back patio, I want to see something...snap peas, basil, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, peppers...something.  Submit your photos and I'll post them on the blog for everyone to see!

Super Moon

Now that the grass is growing again and Spring is officially upon us, it's time to start blogging again.  I'll be posting a synopsis of the past few months and updates in the near future, but in the meantime, enjoy my picture of the Super Moon from Saturday night.  To the left of the photo is the Crescent City Connection, which crosses the MS River.

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween folks!  I expect people to send in pictures of their kids and dogs in costumes so I can post them on the blog.  Also, in order to help combat childhood obesity, I urge all of you to eat your kid's candy loot,  or for those smart enough to not have kids, swipe the neighborhood kid's candy bags. Have a fun and safe weekend.

By the way, I picked about 3 pounds of green beans yesterday.  Along with a squash, a massive cucumber, and a few radishes.  Grow baby, grow.

The Food Chain

This is the scene I found yesterday in my driveway when I pulled up to my house after work.  Don't worry, it's not one of my chickens.

Try Andy's Tri, 2010

I went to Houston this past weekend to watch my big sisters participate in the 18th annual Try Andy's Tri sprint triathlon, which has become somewhat of our new family tradition.  The race is a 300 meter swim, 10 mile bike and 3.1 mile run.  This is a fun race because it appeals to all levels of athletes, from elites rolling on $3,000 wheels to first-timers on old school banana seat Schwinn's. The ages of athletes range from 6 year-olds to octogenarians. This was Ashli's 3rd time competing and Kelly's 2nd.  They both improved on their previous year's time, but more importantly...they didn't die.  Mazel tov ladies!  I'll be sure to slap your tushes next year as I blow by you on the course.
